Controversy! Yes! Today is the day when there is going to be controversy here;-) Today is the day when I'm going to post a convicted killers work! Embrace yourself. Burzum has made more headlines than other no-budget musician that I know of. Convicted of the murder of Øystein Årseth and a few other things. Hated, censored and I almost tagged this "not safe for work" just because still today Burzum brings rage to some people. I'm OK with it. I simply don't think it's right to censor an artists work. He has served his time. I don't agree with his right wing sympathies. But that is not what Burzum is about. It is a kid (or he was a kid) who had played too many role-play games. Today he lives in France, makes his own role-playing game and seem to be OK with that. I could have written more extensively about it, but I realize there are so many opinions about the man that some are blind to what Burzum is. This is one of the most central works in black metal. Like it or not. Still today the sound is copied over and over again.
Burzum -Filosofem (1996)
Filosofem is 80% low to mid-tempoed. Since i have more than one leg firmly rooted in doom metal it might be the reason why i like it so much. It is only track numer 2, "Jesu død" that is up-tempo. From the 90s catalog it is the cleanest production of any of his albums. The harsh sound is made deliberately by using low-quality microphones.
I don't like the instrumental keyboard piece that he recorded while in prison. I disable it in iTunes so I don't have to hear it. The rest of this album is just pure listening pleasure. Dissonant and with creative ideas yet to be copied by any wannabe.
I have drivven miles and miles in snow covered landscapes with this as my only companion.
