1
I wanted to talk today about following through with collaborations no matter where you are in the world. When it comes to music, I've found that collaborating overseas at first was difficult. Me and my best friend, Edgar, had built a home studio at Edgar's place, which Edgar has improved upon greatly since my departure to live in Germany with my family almost 3 years ago now. What is extremely important regarding song collaborations is moving forward everyday possible, and making progress with communication and reliability.
2
Me and Edgar have been making music since 2007/2008. So near a decade into our music companionship/brotherhood/camaraderie, we have learned of each other's skill sets and have been able to compliment each other's strengths providing a well rounded original composition. We know what to expect from one another and we communicate often without little to no arguments. Of course, there are varying disagreements of different aspects, but overall, it's about keeping true to the direction, rhythm, energy, flow, intention, message, approach, idea and melodic blueprint to the song we are trying to produce together.
3
Since he is in San Francisco, our time schedules are 9 hours apart, but luckily, I'm nocturnal and am either up extremely late into the early morning. Or I sleep super early and wake up around 4-6am and stay awake and repeat this cycle. I'm always extreme on one side or the other. Not much balance in terms of sleep patterns. It's really like I never have adjusted to the time difference since I had left California for Germany.
4
When Edgar and I video chat or phone call, we often go through beats he and I both have produced individually, or listen to our friends' productions, such as Genesis7, or EricPaulG, to name a few. We decide on a beat, pick the theme based on the feeling and vibe of the song, we sometimes, freestyle ideas improvise on the spot, and then commit to a collaboration.
5
When I lived in San Francisco just minutes away from him, it was as easy as ever. He'd write his verses and melodies, I would write mine, we would meet up and then record in the booth. It definitely helps that we both have some knowledge on sound engineering/song production both live and recorded performances. I've learned a lot from Edgar over these many years, including sound engineering/recording tips/mixing&mastering, and I cherish the brotherhood that we have.
6
Now that we are near opposite ends of the world, reluctantly technology has bridged that gap, and we have continued building our library of music. The process is still the same but since he has a different microphone, studio set up, and other production equipment varying from my simple home set up, the main objective from me is to get a clean clear feedback-free recording of my vocals and ideas and track out the stems (stems are the individual vocal recordings:usually dry without added effects, and always without the background beat instrumental). Once I have those stems, I send them to him immediately and he handles the production side of mixing my vocals in with his.
7
A tip to make collaborations easier across seas. All parties involved should consider using the same type of microphone from the same brand, but there are many varying factors to recording that won't guarantee the same output for two separate musicians using the same exact mic in different settings and situations. For this Cherish song. We had completely used everything different from one another, which is okay as long as the relative recordings are clear from me on my end, and with some basic depths of quality from the microphone and audio interface that I am using while recording.
8
The varying factors are too many to speak on, but just to list a few, two people using the same mic could be in different sized rooms which give a different cadence, echo, reverb, delivery on a live vocal projection, another factor could be the volume at which an individual records (which can be adjusted), but also the volume and control of the individual's voice. Another factor is the placement of the microphone in the room, whether it is in the corner between two walls, in the middle of the room, or at the middle side. It will all give different sounds and textures.
9
Another note, placement of the musician's mouth or instrument in front, back, side, above, below from the microphone also changes the received musical information being recorded affecting the volume, tone and texture. So you can see how challenging this can be when two singers use the same mic but are singing into it at different angles. These are a lot of the lessons I have learned from and with Edgar, and also through just self practicing as well when recording.
10
More factors include how the room is set up, how thick the walls are, if it is an echoey chamber like setting, or a dry, closed off closet space. Whether you have a nearby window within the room, or a high ceiling, subterranean floors, or hollow walls. All these come into play when recording.
11
These factors don't even speak on the varying degrees and capabilities of technology as well as the intellect and creativity of the user of such technology. I'm thankful to say in the least, that Edgar is a bonafide professional and is very innovative with ideas on how he uses his plug ins with his software and hardware. The reason why this track sounds great is not because I gave good vocal recordings (which is indeed a factor, don't get me wrong), but the way he is able to balance, and adjust the textures of our stems is what makes him a great sound engineer and he and I are still learning more everyday.
12
What I've written so far is just a testament of how far along I've come in my music career and the knowledge I now possess and can utilize with ANY music collaboration ANYWHERE in the world, which I can share with my fellow artists and musicians when working with them on a particular track.
13
My main advice for following through internationally based collaborations is to stick to a deadline or a relative guide-lined time frame with knowledge of each other's availability, always communicate any big or small details, leaving none out, share ideas, put forth rough drafts, even if they aren't perfect, and practice and memorize your material before you record or perform them. Collaborations can be a lengthy time ordeal but me and Edgar completed this song Cherish in a matter of 9 days, I believe, which is great considering I'm a husband, and father of 2 working on my own endeavors and Edgar is a full-time sound engineer doing audio projects and traveling around the USA for various companies and musicians.
14
All in all, give your best effort, don't force it, but let it flow freely, and stick to the general theme to compliment your collaborative partner to create something great, impactful and influential to share with the world.

Full Song Lyrics
Edgar Miranda
Chorus 1:
Teach me how to welcome newer things into my life
Show me love and peace and happiness until I die
Show me what’s inside your heart and put it into mine
Cherish every moment of my life…
Cherish every moment of my life
Cherish every moment of my life with you
Cherish every moment of my life
Cherish every moment of my life, life…
Verbal D
Verse 1:
God opened up my eyes, and I gotta be grateful
Of the understanding given, how I'm living is faithful
Every choice that I make and what I state is so fateful
To top it all off, life is sweeter than maple
Rap deep expressions, clear connection like cable
‘Cause so many people envy, in a struggle to wake, grow
Words have power so I try to write graceful
And use God's gift for attacking back all the hateful
Easy falling off to the wayside, or taking things sideways
Not cherishing, appreciative mind state
So my thanks, I state mine, create lines to migrate
To move you with the music, so fluid the flows can hydrate
Evolve with love's door more open, don't gotta pry, mate
Or be irate. Peacefully vibrate, be not primate
Here for your support like a wedding's best man or bridesmaid
Can't make a difference if reckless wrecking with tirades…
Edgar Miranda
Chorus 2:
Teach me how to welcome newer things into my life
Show me love and peace and happiness until I die
Show me what’s inside your heart and put it into mine
Cherish every moment of my life…
I’ll cherish every moment of my life
Cherish every moment of my life with you
Cherish every moment of my life
Cherish every moment of my life with you…
Verbal D
Verse 2:
This world is chaotic
Deadly atomic
The people with the power
Are the beasts who prey on it
Some are cold, philosophic
Most inhuman, draconic
Steady picking on the innocent
We gotta pray on it
Love is harmonic
Healing quick supersonic
Cannot hold back any moments when the pain can be chronic
Easy to move the world knowing the plates are tectonic
Gotta stretch this bar out like a beautiful swan's neck
Focused on role modeling, not being iconic
Cannot smoke and drink problems away, not using narcotics
Teach the moronic, beyond sick, no nonsense
We start with their hearts and affect the neuronic
This music's for the world, not restricted, it's cosmic
From the inner city youth to other places exotic
Spread this Cherish movement like a plague no Bubonic
Uplifting you with these lyrics, strategical phonics uh
Edgar Miranda
Outro Chorus 3:
Teach me how to welcome newer things into my life
Show me love and peace and happiness until I die
Show me what’s inside your heart and put it into mine
Cherish every moment of my life…
Cherish every moment of my life
Cherish every moment of my life with you
Cherish every moment of my life
Cherish every moment of my life…
