Daniel 1:1-10

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god. 3 Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility, 4 youths without blemish, handsome and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to serve in the king’s palace, and to teach them the letters and language of the Chaldeans. 5 The king assigned them a daily portion of the rich food which the king ate, and of the wine which he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king. 6 Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah. 7 And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.

8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s rich food, or with the wine which he drank; therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. 9 And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs; 10 and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, β€œI fear lest my lord the king, who appointed your food and your drink, should see that you were in poorer condition than the youths who are of your own age. So you would endanger my head with the king.”

The Capture

When the Lord wants to punish His people after they had done evil in His sight, He would allow their enemies to war against them and captured them. This was what happened at the time of Daniel. Daniel was from the land of Judah and the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. They were all captured and taken to the land of Babylon along with some of articles from the temple of God. (verses 1 and 2)

The King's Order

King Nebuchadnezzar gave an order to Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials to get noble/royal men of the Israelite to serve in his court and to teach them to read and write, learn the ways of Babylon. They were to be trained for three years and during that period, they will be severed the king's food. Daniel was one of those that were selected among the four Israelites. The other three were Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. If we are to look at it, in a position of a slave, this was a golden opportunity for Daniel and those that were chosen along with him. We can see this in the verses 3-6 of the chapter we are studying.

The king's Delicacy

Putting in mind that the four Hebrews (Israelites) were to be feed with the king's food for the period of three years. But Daniel who was named Belteshazzar by the king resolved not to eat the king's delicacies and wine so not to defile himself. God made him find favour from the official in charge.

In conclusion to this chapters, we should learn that anytime we sin against God, He will forgive us but punish us for that sin. "The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; - Numbers 14:18. Also, we should remember who we are and where we come from. Just because we are in any problem, we should now bow to the will of satan, No. We should always stand our ground just like Daniel and the reward for it will be something great.

Do you want to know what happened next? Follow me for the next study and I believe you will be bless.

Thanks for reading,
God bless you.
Shalom.
