Chapter 9
“Someone’s got a big appetite.” The man bit into James’ deal, but didn’t quite feel he had got the best out of it. “We switch three more times during the day and I’ll give you the entire stick, yeah?”
James pretended to think a while and tried his best not to look too ecstatic about the confirmed change. He didn’t care what number the man would say, because he’d be far, far away before he got his wheelbarrow assigned for rock again. Settling the deal then, however, would’ve made him look desperate, so he tried to work the deal some more.
“Three additional? How about three total?”
The man smiled. “It’s five now. This now, and the last four. Take it before it’s six.”
James couldn’t care less about the number the stranger came up with, he just wanted him to change the wheelbarrows, and that the next wheelbarrow of his own will be assigned for ore. He pretended to think some more, then accepted and told him the very first wheelbarrow was his. He then tried to get the sugar cane upfront, but the man didn’t budge. He was already on his way with a broad smile on his face.
