Chapter 9
Soon the story from the day before repeated itself. Some workers sat down and waited for the wheelbarrows to get filled up, others tried to catch a quick nap, still third striking a conversation – usually with themselves. Tom and James, however, were both too focused on their next move to be able to relax.
They were both thinking of all possible scenarios that could happen when they reached the train, the possible explanations of the ore and its uses, what the rest of the people under the dome were doing, … They didn’t even notice the wheelbarrows were heaping full until the moving of other men brought them out of their daydreaming.
The wheelbarrow was heavier than they anticipated for it to be. Just lifting it off the ground and pushing it on level ground was hard work, yet they had a giant hill waiting for them not even a minute away.
Traveling through the twisted pathways toward the edge of the mine, they could already feel their arms becoming sore and their back starting to hurt. The moment they started going uphill, the pain in the legs kicked in too, and they were soon sweating like pigs and dying of pain.
