Chapter 9
They parted ways with the men in charge of the ore about halfway up. The roads were side by side still, only difference was the one meant for the ore was steeper and had less turns, because those wheelbarrows were lighter.
Nearing the top of the mine, they started paying attention to the two watchtowers that overlooked the two trains. On one tower there were couple guards standing near the fence, but they were talking to each other instead of overseering, and on the other tower there was a single guard visible, with his back facing the mine. None of the guards – not the three on one tower, nor the one in solitude on the other – were paying attention to what was happening below.
When they finally reached ground level they got a better look at the train in front of them. The metal beast was about 20 wagons long, each of which was at least 15 feet tall. They have never seen such machinery before. The workers – Tom and James included – were slowly pushing the wheelbarrows toward the fifth wagon like a line of ants. There was a ramp built there that allowed for the workers to dump their load into the wagon.
The two payed close attention to everything around them, so that when they would be carrying the ore next time, they would already know what to do. They immediately noticed there was only one guard on the way from the mine to the train, and given that the guards in the two watchtowers were occupied with all but supervising, they both somewhat relaxed.
