Chapter 9
When they reached the ramp, they noticed another guard there – right on top of the platform. He was sitting down right where the workers were dumping the rocks and made sure everything went on smoothly. The guard was eating something and throwing pieces of it down on the floor, attracting nearby mice.
“Shit,” Tom and James both muttered into their chins as they started ascending the ramp. That guard was a real shot to the knee for their plans.
Instead of trying to pull anything off, they managed to notice there wasn’t a lot of room between the wagons – just enough to hide there without being noticed. They also noticed the guard on top of the ramp was only paying attention to the people right next to him dumping the rocks and not to anybody else. Just by exchanging a single look they both knew they had the same thing on their mind. Dump the ore, then stash the wheelbarrow below the train and hide inbetween the train wagons.
The only variable in their new plan would be the workers who would witness their maneuver. They could on them and get them killed. They needed to come up with either a new plan that excluded the workers, or they needed a plan B in case they got betrayed.
