Chapter 9
When they finally started moving, the workers stopped raising their eyebrows at them – the heavy load was too much for them to focus on anything else. They took the same route as before, but now took the more steep, less zig-zagged path when the road split.
Partly because the wheelbarrows were much lighter that time around, and partly because of the adrenaline, they had no trouble pushing them uphill and found themselves on the mine's bank in no time.
The situation was near identical to before when they surfaced near the other train. The guards on the two watchtowers were not paying attention at all and the one guard near the surface point was also just looking around in boredom.
They walked toward the ramp with the others, carefully observing everything around them and at the same time trying not to look suspicious. They faked being tired for the sole sake the other workers appeared tired too. Like before, there wa a single guard atop the ramp, sitting down and making sure each worker dumps their load onto the train, then didn't care about them anymore.
Even though the queue was moving slowly, it felt as if they were going at lightning speeds when their hearts started pumping and the adrenaline kicked in in full. There was nobody to take care of them that time. They didn't even have their guns. If anything went wrong, they were most likely dead. The stakes were real.
