Chapter 9
Tom was a couple workers ahead of James and so dumped the ore onto the train first and left down the ramp. James wasn’t far behind and dumped the ore when Tom just got off the ramp. Tom seized the opportunity and didn’t hesitate one bit to try and wait for his father, or his signal. James was only about 40 % off the ramp when he lifted the wheelbarrow off the ground so it wouldn’t make any squeaking sounds and started running toward the meeting point of the two wagons. He dumped the wheelbarrow right below the train, onto the tracks, and climbed in the inter-space that was just as narrow as expected.
James, now reaching the bottom of the ramp, kept looking back at the guard in case he suddenly decided to turn his head and take a look. He didn’t. The other workers didn’t say anything either. James could tell one of them wanted to follow suit and run after Tom with his wheelbarrow in an attempt to escape, but he was too big a chicken. None of the men said even a single word – some only nodded in sign of respect.
Soon after James reached the bottom of the ramp and found himself on the grass floor, he looked back at the guard who was still looking away, and ran after his son in the same fashion he did – dumping the wheelbarrow under the train. The space inbetween the wagons was hardly big enough for two, but it was doable.
