Coffee Time Meditation #39 -- Personality vs Attitude

“Make no mistake between my personality and my attitude. My personality is who I am. My attitude depends on who you are.” — Unknown

Thoughts on Today’s Quote

My attitude is driven by my personality but the two are not alike. My attitude will also be driven by who you are. It will respond to a combination of your personality and your attitude.

If you approach me with a congenial attitude that is part of your genuine personality, I will likely respond the same. Well, unless I’m having a bad day or there is some sort of miscommunication and then, my attitude will take over. For the most part, the exchange will be pleasant and we’ll both go away feeling pretty good about it.

Approaching me with a combative attitude and I’ll likely respond with some effort to understand what is going on that has created the combative approach. That is my personality coming through and influencing my attitude. The analytical, thinker part of me will try to understand what is going on and then likely try to find common ground.

If that common ground it’s reachable, well that combative attitude of yours will kick my own into gear and the fight is on. My personality wont really be happy with it but it only as influence on my attitude. It can’t control it.

I had a message the other day that came out of the blue and without prelude. It was combative in it’s wording and tone. I didn’t respond to the attitude. I knew that the person it came from was looking for a fight and once it was underway would switch to accusing me of being the initiator. That is part of the person’s personality. Thankfully, the message caught me on a day when my personality was able to influence my attitude to not respond. The other person wasn’t likely happen at the silence, but I was happy with not engaging in an argument.

You really do need to give some thought about what part is responding to another person and which part is coming from them. With awareness, those moments can drive a bad situation from bad to good.
