Coffee Time Meditation #40 -- Set Your Sights Higher

“No matter how many goals you have achieved, you must set your sights on a higher one.” — Jessica Savitch

Thoughts on Today’s Quote

When I am doing intake for Christmas hampers at Christmas time, I often come across people who are quite literally stagnant in their lives. They come back year after year and nothing changes in their lives. Poverty has ground them down and they’ve given up any hope, any desire to move beyond where they are. Most have reached a point where they have given up any belief that life could be any different. The feel forever destined to barely survive.

Others I’ll see once, maybe twice for that program and then they’ll pop up some where else. They will have moved on in their lives because they made a choice to push themself to a higher level. That is how we continue to grow in life, pushing past where we are to move outward.

It doesn’t have to be setting a goal to enter the Olympics. It can be as simple as setting a goal to read a book, to learn something new every day, to write or create something every day. The point is, it needs to be something to make you get up in the morning and push toward that incremental change.

Some people don’t feel they are getting anywhere unless they set big goals and have to work very hard to get there. Others feel overwhelmed by the thought of a big goal and need to set a goal that is currently just beyond their reach.

Set what you need, but set it. If we don’t use our mind, body and spirit for growth, we become stagnant. Stagnation is a slow death of the mind, body and spirit. Don’t know about you, but I’d not wish that on my worse enemy.

Let’s get growing.
