Chapter 9
Tom acted rash and climbed over to the other side as fast as he could without making sure the coast was clear. He jumped down to the grass and immediately collapsed on the floor. His legs were fast asleep and couldn't carry his weight. Lying on the ground, grunting, he looked around. He could see the other train from there and quickly rolled over to his stomach and into a prone position. He could make out the train driver and another guard walking around – probably the one who otherwise sat on the ramp when there were workers around.
He then called for his father to join him. While James was navigating his way through the tight corridor, Tom had already started sneaking over to the other side. When James finally made it across, his jump was similar to Tom's. He, too, crashed on the floor and landed on his behind. He looked around, noticed the other train and the guard too, and reacted in the same fashion as Tom – rolling over to his stomach into a prone. He looked to his left and saw his son almost at the next wagon already, and followed suit. They eventually both made it to the next gap and waited lying down in the grass for the guards on the other side of the train to move the ramp.
