The guards were moving fast. They needed to move the ramp before the next group of workers arrived. Tom and James took advantage of their time waiting to stretch their muscles and wake them up. Last thing they wanted was the situation from before to repeat itself and potentially breaking a bone or two. They needed their climb back onto the train to be as quick and as subtle as possible.
They also paid close attention to the guards talking. Of the things they overheard only the information about the train’s departure was useful, else was food, weather, or work. They learned only one wagon more would be filled up before the train departs. The information had them overjoyed – they wouldn’t need to wait much longer in that confined space.
The guards made three trips, carrying part of the construction each time – first the right ramp, the flat center piece next, and lastly the left ramp. When Tom and James heard the last piece being moved, they looked at each other before making the move onto the train. It was obvious soon that they both decided to stay prone on the floor until the last second before the train leaves – they didn’t want to be crammed up in the narrow space for any longer than absolutely necessary.
