Chapter 10
It wasn't long after that they felt a sort of depression in their bodies, similar to what they felt due to the absence of alcohol, only far worse. The ore was like a drug. It unlocked your brain, gave you power and made you feel like god, but also made you crave more.
Luckily for them, they didn’t have time to battle the withdrawal. The train started decelerating slowly – they were closing in on their destination.
They couldn’t see what was ahead of them and where they were headed because they were in between the wagons, but with the breaks squealing they knew they were close. They looked around to figure out how to make themselves the least visible, and ended up with an idea to climb under the wagon. It was hard work with the train still moving, but it needed be done, else they could’ve found themselves in trouble.
Tom started climbing first. It was hard both because it was physically very intensive, and because there was nothing to truly hold on to. No knobs, no dents, only clean sheets of metal. James helped him as much as he could and Tom somehow managed to get under and hold on to the two bars below the wagon. James tried to follow suit, but he would be too late. The train had almost stopped already, and he knew he couldn’t hurry such a strenuous act. Instead of climbing under the cart, he therefore just laid down onto the two steel rods connecting one wagon to the other and hoped for the best. It wasn’t perfect, but it was the best he could do in the little time he had.
